Metal-ceramic crowns (or “caps,” as patients often call them) are made in cases where the natural tooth is significantly damaged (due to decay or fracture), but also for aesthetic reasons (such as unsatisfactory tooth color or shape). The tooth that is being restored must first be shaped so that the crown can be properly placed over it. The production of a single crown takes about 6 to 8 days. In the final stage, the crown is cemented onto the prepared tooth, forming a natural-looking unit.
In metal-ceramic restorations, a layer of ceramic is applied over a metal substructure, fully covering the metal so it’s not visible in the mouth. This approach ensures durability thanks to the metal base, while the ceramic coating provides an excellent aesthetic result. In addition to their high strength and excellent aesthetics, these restorations are also cost-effective, which is why they are the most common choice among patients.
A metal-ceramic bridge consists of several interconnected crowns. It is used in cases where one or more teeth are missing, and the gap is bordered on both sides by natural teeth that can serve as bridge supports. The bridge supports can be either natural teeth or dental implants. Besides its aesthetic role, the bridge also serves a health function by preventing gum recession and shifting of adjacent teeth. The tooth preparation process for a bridge is similar to that for individual crowns.
